Review

This revision of a 1970s text describes 30 trees that are native to Nova
Scotia, 15 introduced species, and several tree-like shrubs. The
approach is methodical, with clear drawings supporting the text for
every species. The introductory dendrology (study of trees) includes
softwood/hardwood differentiation, trees as “green factories,”
groupings and species characteristics, leaf types, twig types, dormancy,
growth, and reproduction.

The book’s format is that of a catalogue in which each main species
is featured with two pages of text and illustration. The very readable
text covers height, habitat, commercial uses, interactions with
wildlife, descriptions of leaves or needles, bark, seeds or cones, and
wood. Because most of the species included are found throughout much of
Canada (the Far North being an obvious exception), the work is a useful
reference with application far beyond Nova Scotia’s borders.
