The Tiger Williams revolution in golf is sure to spawn more golfing
books than we have seen in many years. Even before that remarkable young
man burst onto the scene, Canadian publishers had done their part in
making the sport more widely accessible. Alan Dawe’s A Guide to the
Golf Courses of British Columbia (1989) and John Gradon’s tribute to
the Royal Canadian Golf Association, The Grand Old Game: A Century of
Golf in Canada (1995), are just two recent contributions to the
literature.
This new guide from Gradon looks at the golf courses in the southern
prairies, with a peek below the border at those in northern Montana.
Gradon describes his book as a “hole-by-hole guide to scores of
courses open to public play ... [which is] meant to be a compass for
adventurers charting new golfing waters.”
The book’s spiral binding and compact size make it ideal for the golf
bag. It contains, the author says, “the advice of a reasonably
competent, right-handed golfer with a handicap hovering around the
10–12 mark and hopefully improving, someone who loves the game,
someone who sometimes plays it well, and someone ... who even
understands it to a degree.” The hole-by-hole descriptions are clear
and precise. Golfers playing the courses featured in this book will
certainly benefit from the tips and advice Gradon provides. Recommended
for public libraries.
