Review

In Fish for Dinner, Paul O'Neill is today's version of the Brothers Grimm. This book is a collection of tales from the many communities of Newfoundland and Labrador, taken from their unique oral traditions. The stories of these communities have created a great collection of ghosts, witches, and many other mystical and mythical creatures.

The charm of this book is that it provides the stories of so many different communities, which makes the reader feel like they are included in the Newfoundland and Labrador subculture. The stories are also accompanied by illustrations by Tara Flemming. The illustrations add to the whimsy and happiness that comes through in most of the stories. While the writing is at some times not quite sophisticated and a bit sloppy, the joy or sadness of the stories is not impacted.

If you're looking for an upbeat collection to enjoy, this book is definitely recommended.
