Review
The science of diabetes has progressed enormously in the past decade,
with the result that most of the material in print about this widespread
disease is significantly out of date. This comprehensive guide should
replace almost all the diabetes literature on your bookshelf because in
one volume it brings together the current wisdom on causes, management,
and impacts of the disease. It is a detailed look at the various types
of diabetes (1, 2, and gestational); how its management varies for
babies, children, teens, and adults; the medications available; and
possible long-term complications.
In easy-to-understand prose, well illustrated with photos, charts, and
tables, the authors explain blood glucose monitoring, insulin,
hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia, appropriate diet, relevant equipment,
foot care, and the impact of the disease on employment, driving, travel,
sex, and pregnancy. Complications explained in detail include
depression; eye, kidney, and heart disease; and nerve damage. The tone
is authoritative but not judgmental or condescending. The emphasis is on
the practical aspects of disease management.
Living with Diabetes is beautifully designed with generous use of
colour, sidebars, and tables. A glossary and index add to its
practicality as a day-to-day reference guide for diabetics and their
families and support teams.
