Review

There are few books in educational circles that focus on the concept of
spirituality and its connections with leadership. In Cultivating
Spirituality in Leadership, spirituality is defined as an inherent truth
that, when awakened, gives rise to feelings of hope and enthusiasm as
well as a deeply felt sense of connection with others. The author draws
on her research and personal experiences to give the reader a better
understanding of how spirituality can be used to enrich the public
school educational system for students and educators alike.

The book’s third chapter, which addresses the theoretical framework
(methodology and data collection), is rather heavy going. The other
chapters deal with spiritual concepts and ways of expressing
spirituality, among other topics. Lay readers should find these chapters
more accessible than Chapter 3.

Doetzel’s book is not for everyone, but it will engage those with a
genuine interest in the role of spirituality within leadership
practices.
