Review
If I were vacationing in Nova Scotia for the first time I’d welcome a
book like this to read in my motel room before going to bed—something
to fill in the background on the nice things I’d experienced that day
and material to whet my anticipation for the areas to be explored the
next day. Post-vacation, I might even keep it on the bookshelf for a
while as a souvenir. But I’d resent having to pay for it.
This is what tourist bureau literature should be. The book gives a bit
of history, a touch of sociology, a little geology, and a lot of
promotion. The text is just enough to hold one’s attention for about
half an hour, and the unexceptional photos won’t earn more than a
five-minute glance. The travel tips section (taxes, customs, lists of
hotels, restaurants, attractions, and events) is useful, but the same
information can be obtained for free from the government and most travel
clubs.
The book is okay, but there are better ones available.
