Review

The fifth edition of this Canadian fundraising authority pays
considerable attention to the on-line world of e-mail, Web sites, and
electronic giving. Early on, charities are advised of the need to
continually adapt to ongoing technological change.

The book covers organizational structures that facilitate fundraising,
various fundraising strategies, the pros and cons of direct mail,
telephone and door-to-door canvassing, Internet fundraising, and the
emerging field of planned giving, among other topics. Numerous examples
of fundraising materials (annual reports, budgets letters, donor cards,
etc.) are included.

Although fundraising is increasingly becoming a profession with
qualifications and accreditation (not to mention educational programs in
many Canadian colleges and universities), there are still many
self-taught practitioners who will welcome Fundraising for Nonprofit
Groups. Given that the book is the gold standard in Canadian
fundraising, it’s too bad that American spellings (e.g., center,
check) are used.
