These are cookbooks for the average Canadian home. Nothing too exotic or
extreme. No ingredients that cannot be found at any suburban
supermarket. No methods beyond the skills of the typical homemaker. And
reliable, delicious results that fit comfortably into the family meal
plan or community potluck.
Each book features well over 100 tested recipes, lots of full-color
photos of the finished products, a practical one-recipe-per-page design,
lay-flat bindings, nutritional information for each recipe, helpful
tips, and the occasional joke. Substitution charts, measurement tables,
cooking methods, a glossary, and a thorough index are also included.
The Beef Book includes all the expected (roasts, ribs, burgers, chili,
meatballs, meat loaf, steaks, stews); the less-expected dim sum, jerky,
pizza, salad, soup, and stir-fry round out the collection without
venturing too far from the heartland comfort zone. The Cheese Book is
slightly more adventurous; covering 30 varieties of cheese, it includes
recipes for pasta dishes, desserts, breads, breakfast treats, and some
special casseroles.
Middle-of-the-road doesn’t get any better than this.
