Review

Berton, Canada’s most popular historian, has written and illustrated
this book dedicated to 51 feline friends. Cats of all breeds and at all
stages of Berton’s life receive the attention of a master raconteur.
From social partners to literary icons, cats are seen as a major feature
of life. The extremes are sounded with the description of a luxurious
cat hostel and of a Kingstonian who has had up to 692 cats at once. If
Robertson Davies’s Samuel Marchbanks had liked cats, this is the
enjoyable book that he would have written.
