Review

The Career Directory was initially begun by two University of Toronto
graduates as an outgrowth of their own job search experience. This
useful, well-designed fourth edition provides linkages between the job
seeker and companies that may be looking for new staff.

The bulk of the directory is taken up with an alphabetical listing of
companies. Each listing provides such information about the company as
its place in the market, number of employees, academic areas most likely
to be in demand, salary ranges, benefit packages, skills most likely to
be sought, and most suitable method for initial contact (including the
name of the human resources officer, where appropriate). The listing
also indicates whether the company hires summer help.

In addition to the alphabetical listing, there are several key indexes.
The Education Index is arranged by degree (e.g., BA in Criminology) and
provides a list of companies most likely to hire in that field. The
Summer Job Index arranges companies by subject groupings (e.g., Health
Services, Real Estate and Construction). The alphabetical index
indicates in which indexes each company is listed.

Although this is a very helpful directory for those in quest of
employment, it is not comprehensive and has an Ontario orientation. It
currently includes more than 500 listings, but this is a small number
for the entire country. The usefulness of the directory could also be
enhanced by the addition of an index by cities.
