Review

This practical step-by-step guide to establishing and running a
successful consulting business has enjoyed considerable success of its
own (five editions and 15 reprintings) since it first appeared in 1985.
Preliminary chapters examine how and why organizations use consultants
and lead the reader through a rigorous self-assessment of his/her
suitability for consulting work. The remaining chapters present the
details and decisions involved in setting up and operating a consulting
business: establishing an office and corporate structure, choosing
professional advisors, preparing business plans and budgets, financing,
bookkeeping, insurance and liabilities, marketing and client relations,
proposals and contracts, and time management. They are packed with
clearly set out, practical information and advice. The guide also
includes many checklists, layouts, and sample documents, which can be
copied or adapted for use in the new business. Appendixes list
organizations and publications that provide information on consulting
and on business in general, and a checklist for evaluating proposals.
There is no index, but the table of contents details the major topics in
each chapter. Essential for anyone considering a career in consulting.
