Review

Birders from across North America are drawn to Atlantic Canada by the
presence of alcids, plus extra wealth in the shorebird and gull groups.
This practical field guide makes identification in these and other
categories as easy as possible for both experienced and novice birders.

The book features rain-resistant covers. An illustrated quick index on
the outside back cover enables the birder to flip instantly to the right
section, saving valuable time in the identification process. (Birds
under observation are notorious for leaving the scene while the birder
searches a guide for the right section.) All species on the American
Ornithologists’ Union checklist for the area are included, along with
an illustrated quick reference guide organized by major group, details
on top birding sites, solid information on each species, notes on
“accidentals” (birds not regularly seen in the area), a personal
checklist, a glossary, and an index of scientific names.

Color coding, a consistent layout and organization of information,
range maps, a type font large and clear enough for rapid skimming in
less that ideal reading conditions (e.g., a misty morning in a swamp
during blackfly season), anatomically correct illustrations with
accurate coloration, and a sturdy binding all add to the book’s rating
as the guide of choice for serious birders.
