Review

Saskatchewan Birds adequately illustrates 145 of the province’s 427
recorded bird species in an introductory format aimed at the casual
birdwatcher. The inclusion of range maps for each species is a valuable
addition. Also welcome is the inclusion of conservation notes on species
(for example, the short-eared owl has been reduced to a rarity in
Saskatchewan, due in part to agricultural expansion and other human
impacts). The author’s use of historical or colloquial names (such as
“prairie dove” for Franklin’s gull) adds depth and warmth to a
bird’s description. This quick guide is recommended for novice
bird-watchers.
