Review

This in-depth book about butterfly species from around the world
provides a meticulous, detailed examination of body form and structure,
life cycle, classification, reproduction, diversity, distribution, and
habitat.

Over 300 color photos, maps, and diagrams illustrate the life cycle,
from egg-laying through eggs, pupae, larvae, emergence, and various
adult color patterns. Some intriguing photos show proof of the
effectiveness of camouflage coloration and shape. Others capture mating,
feeding, and egg-laying. The photos work on two levels: as
illustrations, they add to and support the information given in the
text; as beautiful presentations of some of the most colorful insects on
earth, they serve as counterpoint to the fact-filled text, making the
book a browser’s delight.

The substantial text balances the need for readability with scientific
explanations and terminology. Added to the thorough exploration of the
butterfly’s anatomy, physiology, and life cycle is an easy-read
section of environmental issues that affect butterfly populations and
the relatively new industry of butterfly farming. Six case studies on
the habitat and environmental problems facing various species provide an
opportunity for enhanced understanding of the issues and possible
solutions.

Schappert has made knowledge of butterflies more accessible for the
general reader and advanced the causes of awareness and appreciation,
which are both essential if butterflies are to survive into the next
century.
