Review

This second edition of Savage’s fine study of the bald and golden
eagles of North America is notable for its lively prose and brilliant
photography. In the book, Savage explores the current environmental
influences on eagles and the key behaviors of these great birds, from
capturing prey to raising young. While avoiding the stodginess of a
traditional textbook, Savage packs in an amazing amount of detail. She
has a well-deserved reputation as a meticulous researcher; the results
of that behind-the-scenes work is a solid, well-balanced text that is
rich with information.

Yet it is the 90 color photos that make the work soar. These plates,
the work of over a dozen photographers, convey the strength and majestic
presence of both the bald and golden species. The collection presents
the birds soaring, scavenging, fishing, preening, nesting, feeding,
fighting, and patrolling. We see their day-to-day life, their struggles,
and even their death. Many of the photos are close-ups that show every
feather; others are works of impressionistic art. Collectively, they
illustrate the closing words of the book: “the mystery of eagles is
the mystery of life.”
