Review

Vancouverites, local history buffs, and tourists will find much to enjoy
in this extensively researched collection of 930 Vancouver place names
and their origins. It includes streets, parks, natural features,
neighborhoods, businesses, and some notable individuals who had
connections with a number of the names. Depending on the amount of
material the researchers managed to turn up, the stories range from a
short paragraph to substantial essays. The alphabetical arrangement is
convenient for quick consultation, and many sidebar references among
related stories give the reader tempting opportunities to explore
Vancouver’s history and character further. The writing is packed with
detail but remains upbeat and colorful—serious history with a sense of
humor.
