Review
The Salt Spring Centre, which is located on the largest of B.C.’s Gulf
Islands, houses a spiritual and residential community that practises
Ashtanga Yoga. In keeping with its philosophy, it offers classes,
retreats, and health services to the general public. The purpose of this
book is to give the reader a sampling of what would be included in a
stay at the centre, and to provide a general introduction to the
practice of yoga.
Food, exercise, and meditation are important components of the program.
The book includes 113 flavorful vegetarian recipes for soups, salads,
entrées, and desserts. Colorful illustrations show that they present
beautifully as well as being healthful and interesting new taste
sensations. Yields are generally in the four-to-six serving range. Most
ingredients are readily available, and step-by-step preparation methods
are clearly set out. There is a separate index of recipes by title and
principal ingredient.
Following a chapter on yoga philosophy and practice, the book
introduces asanas (yoga postures) for different parts of the body,
including a selection of “desk yoga” exercises to reduce tension at
work. The postures are all illustrated with photographs and have
detailed instructions for carrying out the exercises associated with
them. A discussion of Ayurveda (science of life) follows, introducing
the concept of achieving personal balance based on body type and mental
and emotional characteristics. The book concludes with a selection of
playful activities to aid self-discovery.
