Review

These stories are about seemingly ordinary people whose lives are full
of desires, deaths, sadness, and disappointments. Some of the stories,
including the title one, cover whole lives and generations in a few
pages, but still leave the reader with a strong knowledge and
understanding of exactly what the character’s life has been like. The
clash between generations and the clash between sexes runs through these
stories, as does a rueful feeling of futility, of lives slipping by,
uncompleted, of bodies aging and deteriorating too rapidly.

These are moving stories with vividly drawn characters whose problems
may haunt the reader.
