Review

The emphasis of this book is on good nutrition, within the context of
Canada’s Food Guide. Each food group is explained; nonfoods such as
water, alcohol, and caffein are discussed; and information on eating
out, types and sources of fibre, vitamins and supplements, reading
labels, and dieting is provided. The book also includes five pages of
suggested menus (with page references for foods listed as well as a
calorie count and grams of fat for each menu), and an extensive section
giving the diabetic food choices per serving for all of the recipes.

In addition to the usual fare—soups, salads, etc.—there is a
section on grains, legumes, and meatless main dishes. Each recipe
includes both metric and Imperial measures, a nutrient analysis, and,
where appropriate, make-ahead hints. There are some beautiful color
illustrations of some dishes, and many attractive black-and-white
sketches throughout. An extensive index makes the book easy to use.

Anne Lindsay’s Light Kitchen offers a range of enjoyable meals,
whether you are interested in improving your health or not.
