Review

This collection of the author’s best newspaper columns is irreverent,
topical, wide-ranging, and very, very funny. Some columns are funnier
than others, but either this collection was very carefully selected or
Thomas is unfailingly funny. There are few that do not cause at least a
hearty guffaw.

The title might lead one to believe that the book is about curling, but
only seven pieces concern the game, and there is not a kind word to be
found about the sport. The remainder of the columns are loosely grouped
into travel (5), pet peeves such as breast feeding in public (10) , and
human stupidities such as ice fishing (11). Thomas never saw hyperbole
or sarcasm he didn’t like, and he applies his all-too-sharp pen to
curling (“A Game for the Nineties; But You Gotta Be That Old to Enjoy
It”); political correctness (“The next time you are tempted to pat a
bum, imagine your own in a vise”); medicine (“A Toronto surgeon, Dr.
Stubbs, learned the technique of penis lengthening from a Chinese
physician, Dr. Long”).

Truly a comic genius, Thomas actually lectures in diverse places on the
subject. This book would be a great medicine for a hospital shut-in or
anyone feeling the least bit blue.
