Review
These two books, each of which covers 125 species, are designed to serve
as a reference for novice or backyard birdwatchers. The illustrations
alone are very impressive, capturing each bird in realistic poses.
Beginning birders will find the descriptions clear for identification
and habitat requirements. Similar species and seasonal bar graphs are
included to help narrow down difficult-to-identify species. Especially
handy is the Quick I.D. section, with its synopsis of field marks.
Complete checklists and excellent glossaries are also included. While
seasoned birders will want to rely on more detailed sources, such as
Peterson or National Geographic, beginners and amateur naturalists will
find Lone Pine’s Birds of... series an excellent starting point.
