Review

Christopher Brayshaw, Curator Emeritus of Botany at the Royal British
Columbia Museum, has produced another fine edition of this useful
handbook on B.C.’s trees and shrubs. The attractive guide includes new
material, revised nomenclature and keys, and updated sources. The
introduction discusses trees and shrubs generally, their classification,
Latin and English names, and such issues as hybrids. The core of the
book consists of the Checklist, Diagnostic Keys, and Families section,
within which a description of and information about the range for each
species are provided. The technical but user-friendly text is
complemented by 79 black-and-white photographs and 16 color plates.
References, an index, and an especially useful glossary are provided.
The volume will serve as a valuable resource guide in the province.
