Review

While far from complete, this directory will be valued by anyone who
enjoys ordering goods and services by mail. The listings give the
suppliers’ names, addresses, postal codes, phones, and if applicable,
fax and toll-free phone numbers. Each entry also includes the cost, if
any, for the catalogue, frequency of publication, number of pages,
whether credit cards are accepted, and a brief note on products/services
offered. For many entries, a logo is included.

The directory lists 900 catalogues on more than 100 subjects:
addictions, alternate energy, clock making, docking, dolls, farming,
heating, house plans, motors, music, religious products, roses, wigs,
and so on. Some subjects are incomplete (distance education and book
publishers, for example). Some entries may be of dubious value: I
selected six at random and phoned for the catalogues. After two months,
not one of the six has arrived. Visiting the local shopping mall will
definitely be a faster way to shop.

A comprehensive index, a section of advertisements, and some tips on
shopping by mail round out the book.
