Review

Here’s volume six in the frantically popular Best of Bridge series.
The small group of Alberta women who are the test-kitchen cooks,
authors, and publishers for the series have a formula that’s hard to
resist.

The books are designed to be practical in the kitchen—binding,
layout, type size, book size, and paper quality all contribute to that.
Next, the recipes have the right balance between the familiar and the
innovative; they present a version that’s a little livelier, a touch
more assertive than the safe fallbacks and standbys, but nothing so new
as to be intimidating. Next, the quantity and quality of full-page,
full-color photos pull the casual browser into the work, where a
typeface with the comfortable look of hand-lettering and a really
generous sprinkling of snappy jokes and sayings close the deal. Add an
emphasis on low-fat recipes, and the total is pure marketing genius.

This series could be why bridge is associated with good food. That’s
Trump presents a very generous selection of recipes covering the range
from breakfasts to desserts. Some are traditional dishes in a low-fat
version. There’s a strong Tex–Mex influence, plus lots of recipes
that fall into the category of luscious goodies designed to wow guests.

In addition to the book’s index, there’s an integrated index for
the six-book series.
