Review

Whether you are a gardener, a cook, or simply an interested eater, there
is much to be gained from this wonderful little book. Lois Hole has been
involved in growing and selling vegetables for more than 30 years, and
her family business is now one of the largest greenhouse and garden
centres in Alberta. She has shared her expertise through radio talks and
regular columns, and has already written three award-winning books:
Vegetable Favorites, Bedding Plant Favorites, and Perennial Favorites.

Since there are more than 5000 varieties of tomatoes in all kinds of
colors, shapes, sizes, and tastes, one might expect this book to be
encyclopedic in scope but dry in style. Not so. The author writes in an
appealingly chatty manner about starting tomatoes from seed, buying
starter plants, when and how many to plant, watering, fertilizing,
pruning, nutrition, and what to do with green tomatoes at the end of the
growing season. Much of the information is presented in chart form,
accompanied by excellent color photographs.

Scattered throughout the book are useful recipes, many of them
contributed by notable chefs. In addition to an index and a
bibliography, Hole includes a source list for seeds and a
recommended-reading list. Pertinent to all areas of Canada and the
northern U.S. states that are likely to be affected by frost, this book
will sustain many gardeners through long winter months.
