Review

Everyone who loves antiques is drawn to the Unitt guides. They’re
direct, simple, and factual—a wish list for collectors and a dose of
reality for those who see antiques only as investments.

Volume 16 covers a wide assortment of mainly small collectables and
treasures—candle holders, lamps, toys, teacups, vases, inkwells,
goblets, kitchen equipment, hand tools, and so on. Collectors of glass
and ceramics, whether utility pieces or figurines, will welcome the
extensive coverage, which includes Mary Gregory ware, Belleek,
blue-and-white, Moorcroft, Moriage, Nippon, Royal Doulton, Beswick,
Torquay, Staffordshire ware, and more. There’s also a section on
furniture, featuring chests, chairs, sofas, commodes, cradles,
cupboards, desks, iceboxes, cabinets, tables, armoires, washstands, and
whatnots.

Each of the hundreds of items in the guide is presented in a standard
format consisting of a black-and-white photo; a brief description,
including material, color, and size; possibly a date; and a price. The
guide is devoid of anything hinting of promotion or hype. It is
completely nonjudgmental, and its just-the-facts style gives it
credibility and makes it irresistible.
