Review
Sprague, a parent, author, and educator, estimates that children who
take bag lunches will require about 2400 of them during their school
years. Is it any wonder that lunch makers frequently run out of ideas?
Super Easy Bag Lunches offers more than just recipe ideas. It also
provides tips for picky eaters, some nutrition guidance, and advice on
organizing home, shopping, and personal schedules so that lunch making
isn’t such a chore. There are lists of staple items to have on hand in
the cupboard, refrigerator, or freezer to make preparation easier. There
are also many suggestions for foods (both hot and cold) for lunches
arranged by food groups (fruit, vegetable, protein, bread, dairy, and
extras). For the ecologically minded, there are instructions on sewing a
reusable lunch bag.
Sprague maintains that children are more inclined to eat food if they
have been involved in its preparation. To that end, she suggests that a
garden area be set aside for children so that they can grow vegetables
and learn about composting as well.
The book gives the impression of having been hastily assembled. It
contains spelling and grammatical errors, some yields are omitted,
measurements appear in imperial only, recipes are in varying formats,
and the index is brief and incomplete. Criticisms aside, anyone making
thousands of packed lunches is bound to get at least a few ideas from
Super Easy Bag Lunches.
