Review

Sixty trails, from 2.5 to 52 kilometres in length, pack this field
guide. The trails cover all of Nova Scotia and Cape Breton Island, and
include inland and costal, forest and open terrain. The trails are rated
from easy to very demanding. For each, there is information on length,
approximate time required to complete, type, facilities, and uses (e.g.,
cross-country skiing, horseback riding). Topographical maps are
included. The entries for each trail detail access route; trailhead
point; area history; footing; vegetation and animals; topography and
geology; conditions, hazards, and cautions (leeches, ticks, rogue waves,
high winds, bear, moose, hunters); and environmental concerns. The data
on the trails are supplemented with general information on hiking and
hostels, the unique characteristics of Nova Scotia trails, and an
appendix of useful addresses.

Designed to slip into a backpack, this compact guide is densely packed
with information, yet quite readable; it can make planning a hike as
much fun as carrying it out. Hikers and anyone else interested in Nova
Scotia’s unique outdoors will enjoy this handy resource.
