Review

The joy of bottle collecting lies in the recognition that bottles are a
link to a way of life that has disappeared. A bit of imperfectly shaped
aqua glass can call to mind an image of farmers listening intently to a
huckster operating from the back of a horse-drawn wagon, advocating the
healing powers of Dr. Thomas Eclectric Oil or Burdock Blood Bitters.
Hold one of those bottles in your hand, and you have found the ultimate
time machine.

For bottle collectors, there is no more respected reference and pricing
guide than Unitt’s, which is famous for its reliability and carefully
researched details. This revised and updated version is a reference for
collectors of Avon, beer, soda, medicinal, dairy, and fruit bottles and
jars. The subcategories of these collectibles include items such as
ginger-beer bottles, syphon bottles, Coca Cola collectibles, and
ancillary items such as bottle caps, ashtrays, bottle openers,
advertising materials, milk tokens, Coke clocks, trays, signs, etc.

The guide illustrates hundreds of items (black-and-white photographs),
giving for each the size, color, date if known, value, and any
exceptional data, such as rarity. The clear organization of this mass of
information and the index by bottle type make it easy for collectors to
learn more about the items in their own collection and to gain an
appreciation of what makes a bottle valuable.

The work includes sections on historic manufacturing methods, early
Canadian glass factories, how to estimate the age of a bottle, lip and
closure types, a glossary, and illustrations of glass-makers marks.

Bottle collectors will not be able to resist browsing through this
guide and checking the age and values of their holdings. It’s a useful
reference for an intriguing hobby.
