Review

As this journal of the final six years of her life begins, the author,
36, is suffering from the complications of juvenile-onset diabetes. As
the journal progresses, the reader comes to share her grief and rage
(seldom overtly expressed) and to marvel at her resilience and spirit.

Brennan’s journal recounts the grim progression of kidney failure,
dialysis, loss of sight, and loss of a leg to amputation. It records the
adjustment of a vital, ambitious, and creative young woman to a life of
pain, loss of energy, and confinement. Yet at the same time as the
author communicates her inevitable sadness, depression, and
discouragement, she also testifies to an indomitable joy in life and
relationships.

This book is a rich source of practical advice and inspiration for
those facing chronic disease, as well as for their caregivers.
