Review

This is the first edition of what is promised to be an annual. It is the result of a mass mailout to over 5,000 firms. There are 38 categories, ranging from “Acoustic Consultants” to “Video Production Houses.” Along the way diverse areas are covered: graphics designs, concert promoters, awards, booking agencies, insurance companies, lawyers, trade shows, music publishers, performing and mechanical rights societies, rackjobbers, record manufacturers, rehearsal studios, and so forth. Not bad for a first effort, but in general, the work needs more descriptions for its sources and names, plus an index to the whole work. For instance, the annotations for the music libraries are very spotty, and the section on opera companies is incomplete. A whole section could even be added for reviewers’ and critics’ names and addresses. In fact, CM Books would be wise to look at The Musician’s Guide (Chicago: Marquis, 1980, 6th ed), a directory of the world of music, simply for ideas about arrangement and coverage, spinning off the comparable material as a Canadian package.
