Glasspool is a British ophthalmologist. This book in the Positive Health Guide series is written for the lay person: minor modifications adapt this book to American, Canadian, and Australian audiences. In language suitable for any reader, the author discusses the major problems of the eye and how they can be treated. It is not the scope of this book to deal with total blindness on congenital blindness. In simple and clear language, with simple diagrams, he explains the workings of the normal eye as well as the major vision problems. He goes on to discuss lenses, children’s eye problems, glaucoma, styes, cataract and injuries. The concluding chapter offers helpful advice on living with failing eye-sight.
Like others in this series, it is very clear and matter-of-fact, offering no false hopes. It also lays to rest many of the myths that surround the common wisdom pertaining to this, one of our most precious organs. He spells out clearly the common treatments for each of the problems one may encounter and possible outcomes of this treatment. Much valuable self-help is offered. This book is invaluable to patients, giving them the kind of information that doctors are often too busy to offer. Books in this series go a long way in putting the patient in control of his affliction. In fact, the careful explanations make it possible for the patient to treat minor problems himself but also make it quite clear when he should seek professional help and what kind to seek.
