Review

The Centre for Resource Studies (CRS) was created to execute “a program of research and publication on mineral policy issues.” CRS publications cover a wide variety of subjects concerning the Canadian mining industry, ranging from fiscal and financial policy to economic and environmental impact, and including human resources, metals marketing, and mine development.

This publication contains a series of papers, by knowledgeable and experienced people involved with natural resources, outlining the condition of the industry in Canada with particular reference to its financial health and its ability to raise funds for future development. The book traces the roots of the current fragile state of the industry and proceeds to offer some solutions for revival.

The authors have pulled no punches and have examined the industry, warts and all, to determine its underlining weaknesses, or strengths. As a result of this analysis, they give some sound advice to mine-makers and legislators.

This publication is important for the mining industry. The ideas generated by the collaboration of mining people, bankers, government officials, and academics, and recorded in this volume, will help guide the evolution of the industry in the near future and probably for many years to come.
