Review

The 1985 federal budget made many complex changes in the income tax laws and certainly in pension rules and regulations. This text concerns itself primarily with retirement income tax reform. The text covers pension reform as it is currently evolving at the federal and provincial levels. Some of the areas covered are Registered Retirement Savings Plans, Deferred Profit Sharing Plans, Defined Contribution Pension Plans, Defined Benefit Pension Plans, the impact of tax and pension reform on pension plan administration, budget changes to pension plan investments, and the coming into full effect of The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

The brochure was prepared by the Actuarial and Benefits Department of Peat, Marwick and Partners. While the authors of the booklet are experts in the field, the writing and the format are such that the average businessman or any interested individual can find this publication understandable and helpful. The topical index is extensive and makes it possible to turn quickly to the pertinent section. This booklet will not solve all the complex problems of pensions and retirement planning, but it will provide a basic understanding. The compilers have done a commendable job.
