Review
Heavily footnoted, indexed, and likewise ossified, Studies in the Book of Job deals with such things as textual criticism, dating, and Ugaritic language, and it includes a brief overview of every tract ever written about the Book of Job.
Anyone who enjoys the literary quality of the Book of Job or who takes delight and inspiration from it ought to give this little volume a miss. Its style and intent absolutely contradict the spirit and purpose of the biblical story, concentrating on insular details and ignoring the wider vision. Presumably Studies in the Book of Job is a scholarly work of value; but it’s difficult to see how one more addition to an apparently already hefty selection of similar studies is truly justifiable.
