Review

In 55 brief articles, prairie nature columnist and photographer Doug
Gilroy writes about “fifty years of wildlife watching” in a direct
and congenial style. Each article, selected from his favorite “Prairie
Wildlife” columns in Western People magazine, is descriptive, purely
and simply, without scientific analyses or conservation messages. His
observations on some species refer to events such as seasonal changes,
migration, hybridization, and albinism. Quotations from the letters of
his readers offering their own observations are included extensively.
Some nature guides are mentioned in the text, but a bibliography and
some maps would have been welcome. Out and About is recommended for
lovers of prairie nature.
