Review
Dr. Roberta Bondar is Canada’s first woman astronaut. A respected
physician and research scientist, she conducted some 55 scientific
experiments on the shuttle Discovery mission, which began on January 22,
1992, and on which she served as Principal Investigator. Her sister
Barbara, a noted teacher and children’s author, shared her interest in
science and space as a child. Barbara followed Roberta’s mission
training closely, and has now recorded it in a logical, enlightening,
and lavishly illustrated volume that will fill many a knowledge gap for
interested young readers.
Interspersed with descriptions of the flight training and preparation,
and later the various stages of the flight itself, are interesting
explanations and digressions that in no way compromise the logical
sequence of events or confuse the reader. Young people with even the
slightest interest in the topic will find this book an easy and
illuminating read. Recommended.
