Review
More Vitality Cooking is a sequel to Vitality Cooking. Monda Rosenberg
is food editor of Chatelaine magazine and the author of The New
Chatelaine Cookbook. Frances Berkoff is a dietitian and co-author of
Power Eating: How to Play Hard and Eat Smart for the Time of Your Life.
Recent scientific studies have shown that health promotion and cancer
prevention depend on the interplay between our genetic heritage and our
lifestyle, including the foods we eat. Evidence shows that eating more
fruits and vegetables can favorably influence the incidence of some
cancers and heart disease. To this end, the authors have gathered
together in this book flavorful, imaginative recipes that emphasize
fruits and vegetables.
Chapters include “Light Bites and Little Courses,” “Soups,
Salads, Grilling, Noodles,” “Updated Weekday Dinners,”
“Entertaining,” and “Fabulous Finales.” All recipes begin with a
chatty description and estimated preparation and cooking times; nutrient
analyses of calories, protein, fat, carbohydrate, and fibre; and
listings as “good” or “excellent” sources of various vitamins
and minerals. Many recipes also include information about shopping and
preparation, as well as storage hints.
Sidebars provide abundant information about nutrients, foods, menu
suggestions, and additional recipes. Most recipes give imperial
measurements only, and several recipes continue overleaf, making them
difficult to follow. There are no photographs of the dishes. Most pages
have childlike sketches, which detract from the professionalism of the
book. The index is thorough.
Whether you are interested in improving one’s state of health or
simply indulging in tasty food, this book of creative recipes will be a
useful addition to your kitchen.
