Vegans know that eating when travelling can be a challenge, and Sarah Kramer’s Vegan à Go-Go! gives vegan travellers well-deserved culinary freedom. Kramer’s collection of nutritious and simple recipes means that with the right ingredients and kitchen gadgets, vegan travellers can enjoy healthy meals while playing the role of tourist. In addition to brand new creations, this travel-ready collection includes popular recipes from Kramer’s fabulous hits How it all Vegan!, La Dolce Vegan!, and The Garden of Vegan. If the proof is in the pudding, it’s worth pointing out that this book received a 2008 Best Cookbook Libby Award.

What makes this pint-sized cookbook so appealing is that Kramer gives the reader doable recipes that make it seem like you’re simply preparing food, not embarking on complicated vegan fare. The Apple Pie Pancakes are moist and divine with maple syrup. Vanessa’s Lentil-Quinoa Stew is restaurant quality, and the Delightful Broccoli & Red Pepper Soup certainly lives up to its name. Destined to sway any tofu hater, the Tip-Top Tofu Loaf is delicious, and Auntie Bonnie’s Wacky Cake is an impressive chocolate finale to any meal. The “Faux Fare” section is especially enticing with recipes for seitan, alternative milks, tofu jerky, and egg replacers. There are also many ideas for dressings, salads, dips, spreads, entrées, and side dishes.

On a visual note, each section begins with colourful and funky photos of Kramer in her signature style and her energy is electric. Described by Herbivore Magazine as “The World’s Coolest Vegan,” it’s no surprise that Kramer received the 2008 Comeback of the Year Veggie Award. Most recipes begin with advice from both Kramer and her fans, and this teeny tiny book also provides excellent recommendations for travel websites, restaurants, shops, and great reads. While targeting vegans on the move, this is a great cookbook and all around travel resource for vegans and non-vegans alike.
