Review

Preservation of heritage buildings has not been a strong concern among
civic and corporate leaders in the City of Winnipeg. The city enjoyed
its economic heyday early in the 20th century. It then lost economic
momentum as people left to make careers elsewhere and corporate offices
became increasingly filled with “transients” on their way up or down
the corporate ladder. In these circumstances it was difficult for
Winnipeg to develop a deep sense of its past.

This attractive sequel, which looks at buildings that could not be
accommodated in the earlier volume, will appeal to current and former
Winnipegers interested in catching a glimpse of that past. The book
contains 17 pages of black-and-white photographs, as well as 23
full-page pen-and-ink illustrations of recognizable buildings. Each
illustration is a detailed rendering of the building’s architectural
features, and is accompanied by a one-page historical description of the
building that is clear, concise, and informative. A map indicating the
location of the buildings is included.

This is a book Winnipegers will return to when they give visitors city
tours and when they want to refresh their memories of the unique
structures that dot the city’s landscape.
