Review

An experienced writer in nature science, Pamela Hickman has produced a
book that is both rich in information and effective in motivating
investigation of our natural heritage.

Emphasizing plants, insects, and birds, the text covers activities that
can be pursued outdoors in all seasons. There is a splendid array of
plant galls, insectivorous plants, owl pellets, leaf skeletons, methods
of observation (including photography), migration and hibernation, pine
cones, bird beaks, hatching insect pupae, plant dyes, and bird feeders
and baths. The book superbly serves as a vehicle through which to
“explore, experiment, and experience” with simple yet effective
techniques.

Much biology is introduced (such as metamorphosis in insects, and
photosynthesis and transport in vascular plants), and the importance of
conservation is stressed. The line drawings by Judy Shore are effective
and good-humored. Quizzes and information about the Federation of
Ontario Naturalists are also provided. Highly recommended for both home
and school use.
