Review

Some 120 wildflower species and their habitats are described in this
excellent compact guide. The guide begins with a useful introduction on
how to use it and, laudably, the importance of conservation. An account
detailing each species follows, providing the names (common and
scientific), description, habitat, and other items of note, such as
whether or not the plants are edible and Aboriginal uses of them. The
text is clear and the photographs are superb. There are also references,
diagrams, a checklist (for those who want to keep track of what
they’ve seen), a useful glossary, and an index.

J. Duane Sept is both a naturalist and a photographer whose pictures
have been published in such notable publications as Nature Canada and
Canadian Wildlife. Common Wildflowers of British Columbia is a book that
should be in the backpack of every B.C. hiker.
