Review

This very attractive book surveys a key feature of Ontario’s natural
heritage. An introductory discussion reviews the diversity of the
waterfalls featured, the underlying geology, seasonality, and their
association with hydroelectric power plants. The forms of falls and
their march upstream are also detailed. The 82 waterfalls themselves are
grouped by location: Algoma (including the splendid Agawa Canyon),
Cottage Country, Golden Horseshoe (including the Escarpment), Lake
Huron, and the Ottawa Valley. Each entry usefully includes information
about location (in several senses), rating, trail conditions, and
relevant geological or social history. Safety and respect for the
environment are appropriately emphasized. Supportive of the text are
good maps, superb photos, a chart, a glossary, and a useful index. This
book belongs in the knapsack of anyone who enjoys the natural beauty of
Ontario.
