Review

Warning: reading the nutritional analysis for these recipes could be
detrimental to your enjoyment of the most luscious book of desserts ever
published in Canada. Here’s a parade of spectacular cakes, tortes,
cheesecakes, mousses, soufflés, trifles, custards, crкpes, blintzes,
ice creams, meringues, pies, tarts, and puddings to make you forget
about calorie counts.

Special occasions call for special meals, and that means a special
dessert. Look no further. Whether it’s the “adults only” doughnut
pudding, a golden apple strudel, the elegant mocha mud cake, or a
colourful pistachio dessert, there’s a treat here rich enough for
every taste and beautiful enough for every occasion. Select one to start
your own family tradition.

Making fancy desserts requires a number of special processes, and these
are explained in illustrated steps. They include working with sugar and
chocolate, forming tart crusts, peeling hazelnuts, piping, frosting
fruit and flowers, edging cakes, making sugar and chocolate shapes,
creating cake boards, and plate presentation. The pretested recipes are
easy to follow, with any unusual procedures and all cake-decorating
directions carefully explained. Each recipe and how-to process is
illustrated with lavish colour photography. Try not to eat the book.
