Review

Glen Boles’s love of mountains as photographic subjects began nearly
50 years ago when he was introduced to mountaineering by a fellow worker
in Calgary. Since then he has completed over 500 climbs, including 37
first ascents, and his photographs, drawings, and paintings have
appeared in many books and journals. This beautiful coffee-table book is
the first publication devoted entirely to his black-and-white art, with
162 exquisitely detailed photographs and pen-and-ink drawings of the
mountains, his climbing partners, and mountain wildlife. It is very much
a personal album which he is allowing us to share. The notes
accompanying the images identify the subjects with dates of particular
climbs and experiences with friends. Like many gifted photographers he
has a special love of black-and-white “because with good contrast it
really shows off the mountains to their best advantage.” And indeed it
does.
