Review

Childhood obesity in children in North America has been increasing at an
alarming rate. In this book, McCrindle, a professor of pediatrics at the
University of Toronto, and Wengle, a clinical research project
coordinator (both on staff at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children),
assist parents in guiding their children to a healthy weight through
nutrition and exercise.

The authors discuss the medical and emotional consequences of excess
weight, help parents determine if their child is overweight, and explain
how different foods provide energy and act as building blocks for the
body. Appropriate physical activities with excellent illustrations are
provided in the book, along with worksheets, food diaries, nutrition and
activity score cards, and case studies. There are excellent charts
describing the major vitamins and minerals, as well as an extensive
index and references from almost 200 journals and electronic sources.

Get a Healthy Weight for Your Child appears to have been hastily
assembled. In addition to spelling and grammatical errors, there are
some unintelligible sentences and even an incorrectly placed chart.
Nevertheless, the book can be of assistance if used as an adjunct to
personal information provided by nurses, physicians, and dietitians.
