Review
Dieting has become a North American obsession, with many popular
quick-fix diets producing only short-term results. Rose Reisman’s
recipe for lasting success is simple: eat moderate portions of a wide
variety of healthy foods—balanced among the four food groups and low
in saturated fats—and engage in moderate activity daily.
This book presents the “nine practices” that constitute the
author’s diet plan. Each chapter has a summary and useful sidebar
tips. In the book’s three appendixes, Reisman outlines how to keep a
daily journal, suggests a typical two-week diet plan, and presents a
table of caloric expenditures of common activities.
The easy-to-follow recipes are organized into the expected groupings of
appetizers, salads, mains, and desserts. A welcome addition is the
chapter entitled “Grains and Lentils,” since they provide
considerable variety and flavour with very little fat. All recipes
include a personal introductory comment and a nutrient analysis;
ingredients are measured in imperial only. There is an extensive
cross-index and more than a dozen enticing colour illustrations.
Reisman’s recommended nine practices, coupled with her low-cal
recipes, are a sensible path to good health and safe weight loss.
