Review

Stuart McLean, of CBC’s Vinyl Café fame, has added to Canadian
literary traditions with this modern Christmas legend.

McLean recognizes that there are those who understand how Christmas
dinner arrives at the table on December 25. These people are known as
women. And there are those who have yet to confront a frozen turkey.
These are known as men. As a representative of this latter group, the
fictional Dave brings equal parts naпveté and ingenuity to the
experience. The resulting tale is spreading like an urban myth, fuelled
by read-aloud sessions on Christmas Eve in an ever-growing number of
Canadian homes.

McLean’s humour is gentle, more tongue-in-cheek than slapstick, and
produces knowing smiles rather than laughter. Like The Night Before
Christmas, a copy of Dave’s tale should be kept on hand for the
holidays by every family.
