Sometimes it seems that the lure of cats is that they don’t need
us—their independence triggers our admiration. Other times it seems
the exact opposite is the source of their appeal—they do need us and
will ask for our help, and that’s irresistible. Whatever the reason,
cat love is addictive. They may be pretty, cute, elegant, fluffy,
dainty—or scruffy, street smart, rough, and wiry. Whichever persons
they adopt, cats have one thing in common—the ability to appeal to our
hearts and protective instincts. Snopek feeds that near-universal appeal
with 10 short accounts of feline–human interactions. Her stories are
populated with stray cats, abandoned cats, therapy cats, and cherished
cats. There are cats hit by cars, abused cats, ill and dying cats, cats
with extra toes, show cats, dumped cats, and mother cats. All needing
love. All with unconditional love to give.
The stories have Canadian settings, usually West Coast. The style is
informal, making for an easy read with high emotional content.
