Review
Andy Brown is the co-editor of You and Your Bright Ideas—New Montreal
Writing and Running with Scissors, as well as the founder of the
avant-garde publisher Conundrum Press. The stories in his latest
collection of short stories are unquestionably outside the mainstream.
In fiction that might be described as cutting-edge urban, we are invited
to enter parallel worlds, to ponder the inexplicable and forsake
reality. The linked and decidedly offbeat stories range from “How to
Build a Wall in 12 Easy Steps,” which is presented as a photo essay,
to ”Writers Get Real Jobs,” in which William Faulkner drives a cab
and Mikhail Bakhtin becomes a clown. There’s no doubting Brown’s
expertise as a writer as he moves from hilarity to foreboding, often
within a single page, and enfolds us in his world of the unfamiliar.
